Kiting in the Tropics

Why kite in the tropics?

  1. Endless Sunshine: The tropics boast sun-kissed days year-round. Imagine launching your kite against a backdrop of azure skies, palm-fringed beaches, and crystal-clear waters. It’s like riding through a postcard!

  2. Consistent Trade Winds: These magical regions are blessed with reliable trade winds that sweep across the ocean. The wind gods smile upon kiteboarders, providing steady breezes for epic sessions.

  3. Warm Waters: Forget thick wetsuits! In the tropics, the water temperature is akin to a cozy bath. Glide effortlessly, feeling the warm embrace of the ocean. You'll get away with riding with a springsuit or even just swimwear. Just make sure you've got sun protection.

  4. Lower air density: I won't go into the science too much but essentially when the air is warmer, it's less dense = less power in your kite.

What to pack for the tropics:

  1. Right sized kites: So with lower air density taken into account, make sure you pack the size kites you'd need while keeping the air density into account. i.e. I'm 60 kg and normally ride a 10m in 15-20 knots here in NSW, in the tropics, I would be fine to ride that same kite in 20-25 knots.

  2. Sun protection: Sun protection is the number one thing we can do to protect our skin. It's definitely ok (and necessary!) to get that Vitamin D but if you're going to be out surfing all day or hanging at the beach for prolonged periods of time, be aware of your exposure. Pack items that work to go from sunrise hikes to boat trips. Pack Rashguards or sun hoodies from Lumar Active or UPV 50+ button downs

  3. Booties / reef shoes: Especially if you’re going surfing or kiting in areas where there will be rocks and reef. Plus, you can use these as shoes to go on those seaside or river walks!

  4. Surf hat: A must. Generally wide-brim hats would be better to give you more protection. We love Plow Surf hats and it comes with a removable legionnaire and straps so you can wear it out on and off the water, especially on windy days.

  5. So many more essentials for the tropics in the more in-depth packing guide we've compiled here.

Remember These Tips

  • Hydrate: Tropical heat demands hydration. Sip water between jumps and tricks.

  • Watch the Tides: Some spots have strong currents. Know when the tide turns.

  • Respect Marine Life: You’re a guest in their home. Avoid disturbing coral reefs and marine creatures.

So, pack your kites, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure. The tropics await—where every ride feels like a dance with the elements. 🌴🏄‍♂️🪁
